CT9/G3TXF : QRV for FOC Marathon 2017

Nigel G3TXF operated as CT9/G3TXF from Madeira for the FOC Marathon in Feb 2017. Many thanks to Uli DJ2YA and to the Rhein-Ruhr DX Association (RRDXA) for the use of their excellent contest location CR3W in Santana. During the FOC Marathon over 1,000 QSOs were made with some 360 different FOC members, all in generally poor HF conditions. QSL via G3TXF on Club Log's OQRS.
Nigel G3TXF arrives at the Rhein Ruhr DX Association (RRDXA) Santana contest site on the North-East coast of Madeira. The CT9/G3TXF FOC Marathon operation was with a well travelled Elecraft K3S, Elecraft KPA-500 and KAT-500 ATU.
The harbour in Funchal receives a regular stream of visiting cruise ships as well as the ferry for Porto Santo. The CR7 Musuem : is this perhaps a throw-back to the days of Mozambique (CR7)? Sadly not. It's all about some local footballer!
Several HF antennas of local CT3 stations were spotted in Funchal. This is one of them. Two Austrians meet : XYL Anneliese and Kaiser Karl I who was exiled to Madeira. CR3W's take-off from NW round to East is a magnificent steep drop down to the sea.
CR3W operators stay either at the Casa de Tia Clementina guest-house or at the Colmo Hotel just down the road in Santana. Collection of operator QSLs at CR3W, including one from Walter DJ6QT (SK) the founder of the RRDXA Santana contest site.
An Austrian built cable-car takes tourists to Monte high above Funchal, the capital of Madeira. The iconic Reid's Palace Hotel high on its perch above the sea near to Funchal harbour.
Pete G8VG setting up his station to operate as CT9/G8VG during his holiday stay near the harbour in Funchal. The magnificent take-off to the south from CT9/G8VG's sea-side apartment in Funchal (although to the north it was not too good!)
For his first visit to Madeira in the early 1960s G3TXF sailed there on a Union Castle liner..... ..... but for his next visit to Madeira (some 50+ years later) G3TXF travelled on a more mundane British Airways A-320 (G-ATWR)!
