CU7/G3TXF - Faial
CU7/G3TXF : Faial Island, Azores

CU7/G3TXF was QRV from Faial Island from 29 April to 2 May 2005. The operation was CW-only on the WARC bands. 1,900 QSOs were made on 30m and 700 QSOs on 17m, from two different locations. Firstly for three days from Quinta da Meia Eira at Castelo Branco on the south side of Faial Island, followed by a day or so from a location near Cedros on the north side of the island.

Faial (CU7) is one of the nine main islands of the Azores archipelago. The nine islands are split into three IOTA groups. Faial is one of the five islands that make up the central group [EU-175] in the Azores. The other islands in EU-175 are Terceira (CU3), Graciosa (CU4), San Jorge (CU5) and Pico (CU6). The Azores (CU) are by no means rare as a country, and even the central group (EU-175) is not uncommon for IOTA, but hopefully this short operation at least provided a few with a useful new prefix on CW for WPX : CU7.

Horta (CU7), Terceira (CU3) and Ponta Delgada (CU2) on the map. TAP Airbus A319 CS-TNI at Horta Airport (HOR).
Horta Airport (HOR) is on the south side of Faial Island (CU7). Nigel G3TXF at Horta Airport, Faial Island (CU7).
View of Pico (CU6) in clouds from QTH at Castelo Branco (CU7). Horta Airport runway through the rushes.
Excellent take-off to the south. Hopeless everywhere else! Vertical antenna at Quinta da Meia Eira QTH in Castelo Branco.
Plane leaves Horta Airport for Flores (CU8) and Corvo (CU9). Nigel G3TXF enjoys huge cup of tea while QRV as CU7/G3TXF!
View to the North-West from the second QTH above Cedros. Antenna pokes up above bushes at QTH on North side of Faial.
The first QTH was at Castelo Branco on the south side of Faial and the second was near Cedros on the north side. The volcanic mountain at the centre of Faial rises to over 1,000m.
